Supporting Miranda Rockey: A Journey of Resilience and Hope

The journey to healing is often long, and sometimes the challenges along the way seem almost insurmountable. Miranda Rockey knows this firsthand. For over a decade, she battled polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder that relentlessly compromised her kidneys and ultimately required her to undergo both a kidney and a liver transplant. But the promise of a new start was interrupted by an unexpected tragedy, and her road to recovery continues to demand resilience, support, and hope.

Miranda, a resident of Greenwood, IN was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease 16 years ago when her daughter Olivia was born. A genetic condition that runs in her family, polycystic kidney disease causes fluid-filled cysts to grow in the kidneys, leading to organ damage and often, eventual kidney failure. Her father and brother had both required transplants, and Miranda knew that her time would come as well. After waiting on the transplant list, she finally received the life-changing call in December: a compatible kidney and liver were available.

After two successive surgeries, Miranda's recovery began on a hopeful note. However, shortly after, a blood clot developed in her airway, triggering cardiac arrest and an anoxic brain injury, which occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen. The injury affected her sight, mobility, and emotional processing, but through it all, Miranda has continued to make strides in rehabilitation, supported by her family, friends, and community.

Miranda’s community has also come together with unwavering support. Friends, neighbors, and church members have organized events and fundraisers to help her family manage the practical challenges that arise from extended rehabilitation and time away from work. Additionally, the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) has established an online page where anyone can contribute to help cover Miranda’s ongoing expenses.

The Garrett Family Foundation is committed to standing with individuals and families facing unexpected life challenges. With our Immediate Impact program, we aim to provide swift and compassionate assistance to those who find themselves in need. Knowing Miranda's story, we felt compelled to join the community in rallying around the Rockey family to ease their financial burden. Our donation is a small gesture in comparison to the enormous strength Miranda has shown. We hope it offers her family some comfort and support as they navigate the path ahead.
